Building Circularity from the Territories
The HUBS4BUILD project (Regional Circularity Hubs for a Resilient and Bio-based Built Environment) will drive the creation of a European network of circularity hubs capable of transforming waste into new resources for the construction sector. Funded by Horizon Europe, the project brings together 40 partners from 13 countries with the aim of accelerating the transition towards a more circular and low-carbon economy.
The main objective of the project is to demonstrate and scale up circular solutions for the construction sector through the establishment of permanent and replicable Circularity Hubs. Through these collaborative spaces, the project will foster the development of new bio-based materials, innovative governance models, and circular value chains that connect public administrations, businesses, research centres, and citizens, while adapting to the specific needs of each territory.
Valladolid, a European Demonstrator
Valladolid will play a key role as one of the project's four full-scale demonstrators, alongside Greece, the Netherlands, and Romania. The city will develop the Spanish Urban Waste Refinery Hub, with the participation of CARTIF, FCC Medio Ambiente, the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y León, and the Valladolid City Council.
Main Activities
Transformation of urban textile waste into insulation materials.
Recovery and reuse of ashes generated by Valladolid’s district heating network for the production of binders used in soil stabilization and road base layers.
Validation of the developed solutions at Valladolid’s Waste Treatment Centre (CTR) and its R&D facilities.
These actions will help reduce the environmental impact of construction materials, promote waste valorisation, and support the development of circular economy models with the potential to be replicated in other European cities and regions.
