What is BRICKS?
BRICKS (Building Resilient Innovation in Communities through Knowledge & Social Innovation) is a project funded by Horizon Europe under the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative. Its objective is to demonstrate that social entrepreneurship and place-based innovation can become effective tools for regenerating European neighbourhoods in a more sustainable, inclusive and attractive way.
To achieve this, the project is developing five pilot actions in Valladolid, Cluj-Napoca, Aberdeen, Marseille and Tallinn, bringing together public authorities, universities, businesses, social organisations and citizens in a collaborative process aimed at designing and implementing solutions tailored to the specific challenges and needs of each community.
The project is built around participation, co-creation and experimentation as key drivers of urban transformation.
Project Objectives
- Drive innovative solutions to urban challenges by developing social entrepreneurship initiatives linked to the energy transition, sustainable mobility and the circular economy.
- Promote collaboration and co-creation within neighbourhoods, engaging public authorities, universities, businesses, social organisations and citizens in the design and validation of solutions tailored to the specific needs of each area.
- Create viable and replicable models for other European cities, generating tools, evidence and recommendations to support their scalability and contribute to urban policies aligned with the New European Bauhaus principles of sustainability, inclusion and quality of the built environment.
Valladolid, a Benchmark for the Energy Transition
IdeVa leads the Valladolid pilot, being implemented in the Zorrilla-Pisuerga neighbourhood, where BRICKS will focus its activities on the energy transition. The aim is to foster energy communities promoted and managed by local residents themselves, encouraging more participatory governance models and greater citizen involvement in the management of energy resources.
To achieve this, the project will combine co-creation processes, technical support and business model development to design solutions that are both viable and sustainable in the long term. This work also involves Urban Climate Economy (UCE) and EOS Renovación Profunda, which contribute expertise in social innovation, entrepreneurship, engineering and energy efficiency.
The initiative will be delivered through participatory workshops and collaborative processes involving citizens, businesses and public authorities to define solutions tailored to the neighbourhood’s specific needs.
Through this pilot, Valladolid aims to become a European benchmark for the development of local energy communities, demonstrating how collaboration between public administrations, specialised companies and citizens can accelerate the green transition of neighbourhoods and generate replicable solutions for other territories.
